Pamela Toomer, R.N., B.S.N., M.P.H., N.C.S.N.
Director, School Health Program

Pamela Toomer, RNC, BSN, MPH, NCSN, is the Director of the School Health Program for the Miami-Dade County Health Department. Ms. Toomer’s large span of work experiences in public health have extended over many different programs and nursing roles within the Miami-Dade County Health Department.

During her time with the agency, her work experiences have included working in the following programs, all in different nursing capacities: Maternal, Child Health, and Family Planning Clinics; School Health, Healthy Start, Tuberculosis, and the Nursing Administration. Ms. Toomer came on board with this agency as a Public Health Nurse while rising through the ranks and holding many leadership positions.

Ms. Toomer's prior nursing experience included working in the areas of medical/surgical practice, emergency room care, and prison medical services. She feels those work experiences prepared her in many ways for her career in Public Health. Ms. Toomer’s states that her most rewarding experience has been providing various types of health services to the public.

Mrs. Toomer is always striving for academic success and professional excellence. She has a bachelor’s degree in nursing, is certified in Community Health Nursing and is also recognized as a National Certified School Nurse. Ms. Toomer also has a Masters Degree in Public Health and has been recognized as “Who’s Who Among American Nurses”. During her academic studies she was also recognized as “Who’s Who Among Students In American Colleges and Universities" and was also acknowledged for making the National Dean’s List. In addition to her nursing profession, she has teaching experience in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system. As the School Health Director, her considerable experience working in Miami-Dade County Schools has been a guide for her many decisions in the provision of school health services.

Ms. Toomer takes her role very seriously, having a great understaning of the position of school health in the community. She is a member of various workgroups and committees that focus on school health. Ms. Toomer also volunteered to help in the development of a school wide survey assessing school health services that was distributed throughout the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system.

Ms. Toomer states that the major goal of the school health program is to provide quality school health services with the intent of helping to reduce medical and social barriers that may interfere with academic success.
