Preventative measures are the most effective way to reduce healthcare costs, promote longevity, and ensure a happy and productive life.

Make Healthy Happen Miami
The Miami-Dade County Health Department (MDCHD), together with community partners, has created the Make Health Happen Miami initiative to tackle obesity and other health problems in our city. The environments where we live, learn, work, and play have an impact on our health, and Make Healthy Happen is working to make Miami-Dade an easier place to be healthy.

Farmer’s Markets
Make Healthy Happen Miami is working to increase community access to healthy foods in underserved and high-risk communities by promoting farmers’ markets that provide fresh, locally-grown produce.

Healthy Food in Convenience Stores
This initiative will increase the access and affordability of healthy food in WIC and/or SNAP-approved convenience stores in high-needs areas. These retail locations will be able to store, market, and successfully sell fresh fruits and vegetables to low-income residents.

Worksite Wellness
Make Healthy Happen Miami will promote worksite wellness programs in organizations across Miami-Dade County, helping to implement programs that will allow employees to improve their mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing while at work.

Infants who are breastfed have a greatly reduced risk of becoming obese. Make Healthy Happen Miami is encouraging breastfeeding practices throughout the county by providing education to residents and healthcare professionals and creating facilities that are breast-feeding friendly.

Child Care Centers
Make Healthy Happen Miami is working to make child care centers healthier for children by increasing access to healthy foods and beverages, implementing daily activity requirements, and limiting the time children are permitted to watch television or use the computer recreationally.

Farm-to-School Nutrition
Make Healthy Happen is working with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to implement a farm-to-school program that will provide fresh produce to local schools. Students will also have access to healthier foods through healthy vending machines.

Physical Activity
Exercise is part of keeping our residents healthy and alert. Healthy kids have more energy, higher attendance, and are overall better learners. Make Healthy Happen Miami is partnering with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to wellness policies that promote physical activity for students across the city.

Safe Routes to School
Make Healthy Happen Miami is working with the University of Miami WalkSafe™ Program to create safe active transportation routes to and from school. This will result in children engaging in more physical activity and having an easier time getting to school.

Active Transportation and Recreation
The initiative will increase active transportation and recreation, such as walking and biking, through improvements to the physical environment. These changes include increasing the number of bicycle racks and creating a county-wide signage system for bike lanes.
