HIV/AIDS Surveillance
Our mission is to provide an accurate characterization of the HIV/AIDS
epidemic in Miami-Dade County for the public, including community-based
organizations, researchers, city planners, policy makers, health
care providers, and local, state, and national governmental officials
and agencies.
We conduct active and passive surveillance to collect epidemiological
information on AIDS and HIV cases. Since 1981, population-based
AIDS surveillance has been used to track the progression of the
HIV epidemic. However, the advent of more effective therapy that
slows the progression of HIV disease have diminished the ability
of AIDS surveillance data to represent trends in the incidence of
HIV infection or the impact of the epidemic on the health care system.
Therefore, following CDC recommendations, state and local public
health agencies expanded their AIDS Surveillance activities and
included surveillance for HIV infection since July 1997.
The HIV/AIDS information included on the following tables and maps
represent the most recent data available locally. Should you need
additional surveillance information or if you are a health care
provider and need instructions on how to report an HIV or AIDS case
you can contact the surveillance unit at (305) 470-6999.
