Syphilis
For the period of January-June 1999 Florida reported 143 cases of infectious syphilis, up 13.5% when compared to the 126 cases reported for the same period in 1998. During this period Miami-Dade County reported the single greatest increase in the total number of cases, from 16 cases in 1998 to 35 cases in 1999, a 119% increase. Since this information was identified, the Miami-Dade County Health Department addressed the seriousness of the increase. The department established a partnership with the University of Miami Medical Department to assist in the daily implementation of the STD clinics. The Miami-Dade County Health Department also recruited and hired additional field operation staff, while establishing a local syphilis elimination team. Finally, the Miami-Dade County Health Department enhanced surveillance activities and is prepared to launch a major public awareness campaign unlike any other in the country.
