What Food Does WIC Provide?

+ Foods for Infants (Birth-12 mo.)
The program strongly encourages and provides support for breast feeding. It recognizes that breast feeding is the best method of infant feeding and nurturing. Those mothers and care givers who choose to bottle feed their infants, however, receive a WIC contract infant formula (artificial baby milk) for the first year of life. The WIC contract formulas are Carnation Good Start and Alsoy. Beginning at 6 months of age, infants may also receive fruit and vegetable juices high in vitamin C and iron fortified infant cereal .

In some cases, when medical conditions contraindicate the use of a WIC contract brand of formula, infants may be issued a non-contract formula or a special formula. The issuance of a non-contract or special formula requires a prescription from a physician, advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP), or physician assistant (PA), stating the formula type, the medical reason for its necessity, and the length of use (not to exceed 6 months).
