What Food Does WIC Provide?

+ Foods for Women and Children
Women and children participating in WIC receive food checks for milk, cheese, eggs, cereals high in iron, peanut butter or dried beans or peas, and fruit or vegetable juices high in vitamin C. Women who are exclusively breast feeding their babies may receive carrots and canned tuna fish as additional items.

Special formulas or nutrition supplements are also available to women and children participants with certain medical conditions. The issuance of special formula or a nutrition supplement requires a prescription from a physician, ARNP, or PA, stating the formula type, the medical reason for its necessity, and the length of use (not to exceed 6 months).

WIC provides supplemental, nutritious foods for low to moderate income pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women; infants; and children up to age 5 who are at nutrition risk. These foods are rich in protein, iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C. These are key nutrients commonly lacking in the diets of the WIC target population.

Participants exchange WIC food checks at approved retail grocery stores. In some cases, special formulas are distributed directly to the participant from the WIC local agency See reverse side for list of WIC eligible foods.
